Why I Finally Said Yes to Cruising
Have you ever craved something, simply something different? Experiences that are elevated, inclusive, and designed for grown-ups who know what they want (and what they don’t). Cruising was never high on my list. I love freedom and authenticity in travel, and I wasn’t sure a cruise could deliver that until Virgin Voyages came along.
This Halloween, I’ll be sailing on the Valiant Lady for their Halloween Soirée, and it’s my first-ever Virgin Voyage. I couldn’t think of a better way to experience the line that’s been turning the cruise world upside down.
Adults Only, Come As You Are
Virgin Voyages is unapologetically adults-only, which means the entire atmosphere is designed for travelers like me, and the travelers I love to plan for. From quiet mornings with ocean views to lively nights with world-class entertainment, the vibe is grown-up, laid-back, and completely free of kids and chaos.
What I love most, though, is their “Come As You Are” philosophy. There’s no dress code, no judgment, and no pretense. Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with your favorite friends- and the LGBTQ+ inclusivity is genuine, not performative. You’ll find drag brunches and bingo, and an atmosphere that celebrates self-expression. It’s refreshing, it’s relaxed, and it feels like the kind of travel space we’ve all been waiting for.
Sustainability That Actually Means Something
I’ll be honest , sustainability has always been one of the main reasons I hesitated to cruise. The idea of big ships and environmental impact just didn’t sit right with me. But Virgin Voyages is proving it can be done differently.
Their ships use Climeon technology, which converts engine heat into clean energy, significantly cutting down on emissions. They’ve eliminated single-use plastics, use refillable products in their cabins, and partner with ports that share their commitment to protecting the planet.
They’re showing that luxury and responsibility can coexist, and as someone who tries to travel consciously, that means a lot to me.
No Buffets, No Formal Nights, No Problem
Let’s talk food — because Virgin Voyages took dining at sea and reinvented it completely. There are 20+ eateries on board, all included in your fare. No buffets, no main dining rooms, and definitely no rubber chicken banquets.
Instead, you’ll find beautifully designed, made-to-order restaurants created by Michelin-starred chefs. Whether it’s Korean BBQ at Gunbae, plant-based bites at Razzle Dazzle, or a late-night stop at The Galley, the focus is on quality, creativity, and freedom. You can eat when you want, where you want — just like on land.
A Fleet Built for Modern Travelers
Virgin Voyages currently sails four ships, each with its own personality and global itineraries.
Scarlet Lady, sailing from Miami
Valiant Lady, my Halloween home for the week
Resilient Lady, exploring the Greek Isles and beyond
Brilliant Lady, the newest addition to the fleet
Each ship is bold, artistic, and designed for the kind of traveler who values experiences over excess. Think rooftop decks, live DJ sets, wellness spaces, and a crew that feels more like your friends than staff.
Music at the Heart of Every Sailing
As a lifelong music lover, I appreciate that Virgin Voyages doesn’t just play music — it lives it. Richard Branson’s legacy with Virgin Records is woven into the brand’s DNA. Past sailings have featured Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, and other music legends curating the onboard vibe.
I love that connection between travel and sound — especially knowing Nile Rodgers helped shape the sound of David Bowie’s Let’s Dance era. There’s something poetic about sailing into the sunset with that same spirit of creativity pulsing through the decks.
Sailing Differently
This voyage feels like more than a vacation, it’s a statement. It’s proof that cruising can be stylish, sustainable, inclusive, and adult-oriented without losing the sense of fun and freedom that travel should bring.
I can’t wait to experience the Valiant Lady for myself this week, from the Scarlet Night celebration to the Halloween Soirée, and share what makes Virgin Voyages stand apart from every other line at sea.
If you’ve ever wondered whether a cruise could fit your travel style, this might just be the one to change your mind, too.
